Project 1: Launch a UK Communications Plan for a New Therapy | Reticid

Developed a strategic UK launch communications plan for a fictional Phase 3 therapy for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), balancing scientific communication, stakeholder engagement, regulatory compliance, and patient-centred messaging.

Duration: 4 weeks

Project Type: Group

Target Audience: Healthcare Professionals (primary)

The Brief: Our team was tasked with developing a communications plan to support the UK launch of Reticid, a fictional investigational therapy for early-stage ALS. The brief required a 6-month pre-launch and launch strategy that would build awareness among healthcare professionals, support reimbursement readiness, engage patient communities responsibly, and remain compliant with regulations governing pre-license communications.

Key Contribution: ALS Healthcare Professional Resource Kit

As part of the communications plan, I developed the concept for an educational resource kit aimed at HCPs. The toolkit was designed to increase awareness of ALS, encourage earlier diagnosis by helping clinicians recognise the signs of ALS earlier, and provide a background on Reticid ahead of launch while remaining compliant with pre-license regulations. This includes a diagnostic pathway guide, patient case studies, disease education materials, and published Phase 2 data to provide scientific context.

*Please note: This project was completed as part of the healthcare communications training programme. The pharmaceutical company, product, and campaign are fictional and were created for educational and training purposes.

My Contribution:

  • Conducted a SWOT analysis to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats influencing the UK launch strategy
  • Developed key communications tactics, including the ALS HCP Resource Kit
  • Contributed to the launch communications strategy and pre-launch engagement plan
  • Designed and formatted the presentation deck to ensure a clear, professional, and consistent format
  • Collaborated with team to deliver the final communications proposal

Project 2: Boots & NHS Pharmacy First Scheme | A Communications Improvement Proposal

Developed a communications proposal to improve public awareness and uptake of the NHS Pharmacy First service through Boots. The project identified barriers with the current patient journey and proposed an integrated communications strategy to help patients access the right care more quickly while reducing unnecessary GP appointments.

Duration: 1 week

Project Type: Individual

Audience: General Public/Patients

The Brief: Select a healthcare organisation, medicine or service and identify a communications improvement that could enhance awareness, engagement or patient experience. Develop a proposal outlining the communication strategy, key audiences, channels and stakeholders required to successfully implement the change.

The Challenge: Although the Pharmacy First service offers patients free treatment for 7 common conditions without needing a GP appointment, awareness remains low, and many people continue to default to booking GP appointments. My challenge was to identify why existing communications were not changing patient behaviour and propose a strategy that would make the service easier to understand and access.

My Approach: My proposal focuses on creating a clearer entry point into primary care by combining digital navigation, community engagement and integrated communications.

Key Insights: Through analysing the existing service, I identified several communication barriers…

  • Low public awareness of the Pharmacy First service
  • Patients choosing GP appointments rather than considering pharmacy care instinctively
  • Multiple healthcare services existing without a clear or connected patient journey
  • Existing communications providing information but not actively guiding patient decision-making

Proposed Solution: Integrated Care Navigation System

I proposed an integrated communications approach that guides patients towards the most appropriate healthcare service based on their symptoms. The strategy positions Boots as the first point of navigation into the wider healthcare system.

The proposal includes:

  • A digital symptom checker accessed through QR codes or Boots app
  • Clear signposting to Pharmacy First, Online Doctor or GP services depending on clinical need
  • GP surgery partnerships to redirect suitable patients
  • In-store educational materials and symptom-based signage
  • Social media campaigns explaining which conditions pharmacists can treat
  • Community outreach and NHS-backed messaging to improve trust
  • Directed patients with severe symptoms to urgent care services where appropriate
